Our Story

In December 1988, Sue Todd had a simple idea...a high-quality decorative mailbox cover that could be changed seasonally for the holidays. Her husband, Curt, spent about $20 on materials to make a prototype. They decided on flexible vinyl for durability and insisted on screen printing for fade-resistance. But they were stuck when it came to an easy attachment method.

The solution revealed itself one evening when Curt went to the refrigerator for some ice cubes. He noticed a flexible magnetic calendar attached to the freezer door. “I grabbed it and ran outside,” Curt recalls the moment. “It was dark, 20 degrees, snowing, and I was wrapping a calendar around our mailbox in my slippers.”

The concept of MailWraps® magnetic mailbox covers was born. But it wasn’t immediately successful. For years, Sue operated the small mail-order operation in the basement of their home. As the volume slowly grew, she hired a neighbor, then her mother, then Curt’s mother to help assemble the product. Things really took off in 1999 when the couple began licensing artwork from popular artists. The business moved from their basement in January 2001 into a 3,000 sq. ft. office warehouse.

Ten years later...Magnet Works has outgrown another building. Plans are underway to move to the company’s 5th new location in the past 10 years. Their current 18,000 sq. ft. facility is being replaced with a more spacious 51,000 sq. ft. building, tentatively scheduled for occupancy in December 2008.

An unprecedented 26 of the company’s 43 terrific employees are either relatives or neighbors. Now that’s a family business!
